If your space can accomodate a sprawling sofa, no style is cozier than a deep-seated pit sectional. While most classic sectionals are L- or U-shaped, these luxurious couches are typically composed of modular pieces that can be configured into one large square or rectangular lounging area. Not only are they great for napping and hosting movie nights, but they can also double as statement pieces.
When searching for the best pit sectionals, interior designer Britt Zunino suggests looking for styles that are extremely versatile. “I prefer sofas with a range of modular components that can be rearranged for different uses,” she notes. “Selecting a sofa that can effortlessly evolve with your changing needs is a smart long-term investment.” Additionally, she recommends choosing options made with natural fabrics, like mohair velvet and wool, that are durable and timeless.
Per Zunino, scale is also an important factor to consider while shopping. She personally gravitates towards lower-profile, sculptural couches, which she says will look less bulky in a room and be easier to get on and off of. “Comfort for lounging is critical, but no one wants to get stuck, either,” she notes.
With all this in mind, we scoured the internet and tapped Zunino for her top recommendations to find the 15 best pit sectionals available. Scroll on to see which ones made our list.

What are pit sectionals?

“Typically, you would spend a lot of your time unwinding after a long day of work or with your family on a sofa, which makes it important to have comfortable seating,” says Brittany Farinas, CEO and Creative Director of House of One. If you’re looking to increase the seating space in your home, pit sectionals are a great way to accomplish this. “Deep and modular sectional sofas are extremely versatile and can be configured into a pit sectional: a bed-like formation perfect for napping or lounging,” explains Madison Adam, interior design service manager at Article.
Can you achieve the same effect with traditional sofas?

Already own a classic sofa? Try creating a pit sectional setup using the pieces you already have. “Traditional sofas can be used to suggest a pit sectional by facing a pair of sofas and incorporating upholstered ottomans to bridge the primary seating,” says San Francisco-based designer Kelly Lasser.
Ottomans are another great way to create a pit-like seating arrangement. “A great way to create a pit sectional-style setup is by using ottomans to complete the ‘square’ shape with your existing sofa,” adds Adam. “It’s a bonus if you’re able to get an ottoman that is similar in height or fabric to your sofa to make the setup look more cohesive. Furthermore, you can define your seating area by placing a rug under the sofa. Ensure that the rug is large enough to accommodate the entire seating arrangement, including the front legs. This helps anchor the furniture and adds a layer of texture.”
How to style a pit sectional

For Adam, picking pieces that complement the pit sectional are key. “Throw blankets and pillows are a must to enhance the ultra-cozy atmosphere, and they can add color and visual interest. A mix of different sizes and patterns can create a dynamic and inviting look. I also recommend having side tables by your sofa as a spot to put down any snacks or drinks you may be enjoying during lounging sessions or movie nights.”
Styling a pit sectional also means paying attention to the rest of the room. “Larger sectionals should float in a room to enhance their sculptural quality and allow for sufficient circulation. A mix of artisanal accessories, lighting and creative side tables will complement the seating layout. Layered styling should address practical concerns, while offering visual interest,” says Lasser.
