Sydney Sweeney, who plays Cassie on Euphoria, sees all your Halloween costumes inspired by the hit HBO series and raises you themed pajamas and lots of candy.
“I haven’t figured out a costume yet, but I’ve been buying a lot of Halloween pajamas, fall candles, and fun pumpkin arts and crafts,” the actor tells Bazaar. “Halloween is one of my favorite holidays, and I love candy. I’m not picky—I’m a sugar addict.”
Sweeney loves Halloween so much that she spent her recent 27th birthday celebrating the spooky holiday a little early, at Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights. And just days after, she celebrated another big milestone: Kérastase’s 60th anniversary. Sweeney, an ambassador for the luxury hair brand, showcased her musical talent for the campaign alongside Emily Ratajkowski and Ebonee Davis, performing a sultry rendition of “Happy Birthday” in the style of none other than Marilyn Monroe.
Aside from her expert vocals, Sweeney’s glossy hair was the other star of the campaign, so we caught up with her to talk about her secret to “fluffy and soft” hair and her plans for the spookiest night of the year.
What changes did you notice in your hair once you started using Kérastase?
Before I started using Kérastase, my hair coming out of the shower would dry so flat and greasy, but now it is so fluffy and soft. It’s incredible, because I have really fine, oily hair, so finding products that don’t weigh it down even more is a difficult task—until now, with the Première line. It’s honestly changed my life.
Do you feel more like yourself with long hair or short hair?
I’ve had long hair most of my life, and I recently did a trim to cut off all the dead ends. I’m on a hair care journey right now, and I feel like I’m the most me when it’s just naturally air-dried and not fried with heat. I’ve been learning a lot about my hair. My hairstylist, Glen Oropeza, has helped me a lot with this journey of mine. He’s been integrating hair treatments into my routine before red carpets or interviews. The biggest change for me has been treating the hair before using tools because before, I would just go in and not really protect my hair like I should have been.
What’s your biggest hair faux pas?
When I was in middle school, I curled my hair every single day, and I still cannot believe I did that. And not even the pretty kind of curl—the ringlet curl that you don’t brush out. I look back and say, “That was a no.”
We didn’t know any better back then, but you’re making up for it now. Which one of your characters do you think would have a full Kérastase line in her shower?
Cassie, for sure. She’s doing everything.
Are you adventurous with your hair? Do you think you’ll always be blonde?
Over the last few years, I’ve been playing around with it. I went blonde for Cassie. Then, I dyed my hair red for another role, [in National Anthem], but I had to go right back to blonde. It fried my hair. I was the girl in the shower pulling hair out like cotton candy and crying my eyes out. Then, I started focusing on making my natural hair as healthy as possible before coloring it again, and utilizing wigs whenever I can.
Is there a color you feel most comfortable in?
I love embracing every color; it’s so fun and a great way to express yourself. Hair can do so much to bring out the different sides of yourself. I love myself with all hair colors.
Tell me about working on this campaign. You’re a great singer and I feel like it’s one of your hidden talents! Do you only sing for special occasions? What was this shoot day like?
I have crazy stage fright. Everyone rolls their eyes when I say this, but I do, and I was nervous the entire shoot. But it was really fun being all together and celebrating Kérastase. We were all in really good spirits—plus, our hair was beautiful and we all felt sexy.
You also just celebrated a birthday! Both you and Kérastase are Virgos. I saw you went to Universal. How was that?
Yes, we went Halloween Horror Nights. I’ve gone every year with my dad since I was little, and this year I’m going to be spending all of October filming in North Carolina, so I knew I wasn’t going to be able to go [around Halloween]. It just worked out that my birthday was my only free day. I couldn’t let the tradition be ruined! I brought my dad and some friends.
I love that. Was that your favorite birthday thus far?
It’s one of them, for sure. Last year, I had a lot of fun. It was a dream birthday party: an ’80s prom theme. It was cool seeing everyone embrace the theme, and it made me feel lucky to know how fun my friends are. This year, it was more low-key and homey.
What’s your favorite thing about being a September baby?
All I can think about is that my parents probably were really enjoying their New Year’s.
Since you’ll be on set for Halloween, do you think you’ll celebrate?
I’m not sure what the trick-or-treating Halloween vibe is in the area yet, but I’m bringing it into my home. I am going to deck out my entire trailer with stuff I got from Target and have a treat basket for all the crew.
