Stranger Things star Charlie Heaton has apologized to fans and co-stars following an incident at LAX airport which saw him being stopped and sent back to the UK.

The 23-year-old actor – who plays Jonathan Buyers in the hit Netflix series – ended up missing the premiere party for the show's second season.

Releasing a statement regarding the incident, which took place on October 21, Heaton said (via Deadline): "My planned travel to the US last week was affected by an issue at US immigration, and I am working to rectify it as soon as possible.

"I do want to clarify that I was not arrested or charged with a crime, and cooperated fully with the US officials at LAX.

"I'm sorry to all the fans and my Stranger Things family for missing the premiere. We are all so proud of this season and I would never want this story to negatively impact the show."

The Sun had alleged that Heaton had been caught by drug-sniffing dogs at the LA airport, where border officials found traces of white powder on his personal items.

Heaton – who was born in Bridlington, Yorkshire – missed the Stranger Things 2 launch which featured cast members including Winona Ryder, Millie Bobby Brown and Heaton's rumored girlfriend Natalia Dyer.

Meanwhile, it was reported earlier this year that Heaton is in talks to star in X-Men spin-off The New Mutants.

Stranger Things 2 returned to Netflix on Friday (October 27).
