The youngest inaugural poet in American history, Amanda Gorman, has made her Met Gala debut.
In a political, symbolic showing, the poet-activist stepped out on the red carpet wearing a gorgeous ensemble inspired by the Statue of Liberty. She wore strapless custom royal blue Vera Wang gown that featured a sweetheart neckline, mini hem, and flowing draped detailing, along with more than 3,000 individually hand-stitched crystals. She paired the dress with matching royal strappy stilettos and wore her hair in a stunning long side braid. Playing up the evening's glamorous look, she also sported delicately placed crystals on her face that matched her hairstyle's shimmery headpiece.
She additionally carried along with her a book-shaped Edie Parker clutch that takes after the book held by the Statue of Liberty herself, featuring the same text that could be found at the statue's base, "Give us your tired."
Outside of her Met Gala engagements, Gorman has been busy making a difference. In addition to her impressive titles as National Youth Poet Laureate and Harvard alum, Gorman is now also a beauty brand ambassador. She recently announced a three-year partnership with Estée Lauder, serving not only as brand ambassador but also as its first Global Changemaker, for which she will lead discussions on the meaning of self-expression within the beauty industry. She will also curate the beauty brand's new initiative, Writing Change, which strives to advance literacy among women to leverage equality and accessibility for social change.
"I am honored to partner with the Estée Lauder Companies to activate change through literacy, and to represent a brand founded by such an inspiring and daring woman," Gorman reportedly said in a statement. "Mrs. Estée Lauder shattered glass ceilings as a leader in business 75 years ago. Embracing this spirit, I am delighted that our partnership will help inspire women, girls, and all people around the world to do great things, to disrupt, to be confident, and to be future leaders in whatever path they take."
Beyond the beauty mogul sphere, Gorman has been continuing her poetry, using her words to inspire the ongoing fight for equal rights. Last week, she announced her collaboration with NowThis News, while also sharing a poem about pro-choice rights. "In this hour, it is our duty to find the brave beauty in rooting for other women," she wrote on Instagram. "Women and those assigned female at birth deserve the right to bodily autonomy and the right to choose. ... We must continue to speak out in support of safe-access to healthcare and the right to choose."
