The It couple of every Hollywood event arrived at tonight's event, where they are both co-chairs, alongside Regina King and Lin-Manuel Miranda, looking lovestruck and very golden.

Lively wore a floor-length rose gold gown with a shimmery geometric design and a giant bow by Atelier Versace. She topped off the look with long pink-and-green earrings by Lorraine Schwartz, rose gold gloves, and a tiara. She looked every bit like a glamorous present—but the surprises didn't stop there. While she was on the Met steps, gala assistants untied her bow to reveal the bright blue-green train that was hiding underneath. And her rose gold gloves turned blue on the bottom half too. Double-sided gown or optical illusion?

Apparently, the look is an ode to New York City. The dress transformation is meant to represent the Statue of Liberty going from copper to green. The draping on the gown is also meant to mimic that of the statue, the train represents the 12 zodiac signs present on the constellation ceiling of Grand Central Terminal, the golden design on the torso is meant to represent the Empire State Building. And the tiara is meant to symbolize Lady Liberty.

"Well ... instead of looking to fashion to influence the dress, I looked to New York City architecture and the classic buildings," Lively told People on the carpet.

The crown has seven tiers, and the statue has seven rays, "representing the sun's rays and also the seven seas and continents, which represents welcomeness, inclusivity, and freedom," Lively said. "I sound like a Wikipedia page. And she has 25 windows, so Lorraine put 25 stones at the bottom [of the tiara]," she added.

The Adam Project actor, who kept it simple in a classic tux and white bow tie, seemed just as shocked as everyone else upon seeing his wife's intricate ensemble. Cue the Twitter reactions.

Lively and Reynolds, who married in 2012, walked their first red carpet together in 2014 as a couple at that year's Met Gala—in coordinating Gucci looks. The Gossip Girl actress wore a silk chiffon blush Gucci Première gown, while Reynolds looked sharp in a suit from the Italian fashion house.

They have since become red-carpet regulars, and Lively—who is her own stylist—never disappoints with her looks.

"I have control issues and a big ego—that's probably the honest answer [for why I won't hire a stylist]," she told WWD in 2018. "I just like it. I love design and I love fashion and it's a way to be creative. In my job I get to be creative, but it's over a period of time and so many other people are involved, whereas this is a beginning, middle and end, and I get to be creative and there's an end date in the near future. It's the same reason why I like doing my friends' hair and makeup or cooking—you get to be creative and finish it."
