Quinta Brunson is heading back to school—or, I mean, back to the Emmys!
On Sunday evening, the Abbott Elementary creator and star arrived at Los Angeles's Peacock Theater for the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony. For the occasion, she delivered one of her most glamorous looks to date, opting for a slick midnight black gown from Georges Chakra’s Fall/Winter 2024 couture collection.
The flashy piece featured a pointed strapless neckline, a large bow adorning the waist, and another at the knees. The figure-hugging piece flared out into a dramatic mermaid silhouette, with the reflective fabric pooling onto the ground around her feet. She accessorized with Tiffany & Co jewelry.
Brunson is nominated tonight in the category of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her Abbott Elementary role, teacher Janine Teagues. At the 2023 ceremony, Brunson won the Emmy in the same category; she also took home the award for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series in 2022.
The mockumentary-style sitcom became an overnight sensation when it premiered on ABC in 2021. The show follows the challenges that educators at a Philadelphia elementary school face, from budget cuts to unruly students.
Brunson opened up about creating and starring in the show in a 2022 interview with Harper’s Bazaar.
“When the show was first developed, Janine was more of a complete side character, not at all as prevalent as she is in the iteration that made it to TV, and it really revolved around [Sheryl Lee Ralph’s character] Barbara,” she said. “When we really started getting into the mechanics of a documentary crew, it turned into, well, who would be the most inviting to this documentary crew? It wouldn’t be Barbara. It would be Janine … but Janine would be the one who would be trying to show the world how good this world is. Here’s how great teaching is, like, trying to compensate. So she became a bigger character, but initially, it was a side character.”
