In the early 2010s. people loved the narrative that George Clooney was a bachelor for life. The silver fox had dated a lot, but he’d never found the one. But in 2013, he met his match in human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin. She was so smart, so chic, so interesting—of course our George fell in love.
Now, over a decade later, the power couple shares two kids and remains strong as ever.
Ahead, a look back on George and Amal’s epic romance.
April 24, 2025: George gushes about Amal on CBS Mornings.
While doing press for his Broadway show, Good Night, and Good Luck, George gets candid about his love for his wife. He tells Gayle King, “I feel so extraordinarily lucky to have met this incredible woman, and I feel as if I hit the jackpot.” He continues, “And there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think I’m the luckiest man in the world.”
February 20, 2025: George talks about getting older and thinking about his future with Amal.
In a poignant interview with the New York Times, George talks about meeting Amal later in life and being 17 years her senior. He says to the paper that when he turned 60, he told his wife: “I said, ‘Look, I can still play full-court basketball. I can still run around. I can still do pretty much everything I did when I was 30. But in 30 years, I’m 90. That’s a real number. My dad just hit that. And there are some things you’re not doing no matter how many granola bars you eat.”
He adds, “I told Amal, ‘We have to focus on the next 20, 25 years of making sure that we’re jamming in everything we can.’ Not just work, because no one at the end of their life goes, ‘God, I wish I worked more.’”
September 27, 2024: They celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary at the Clooney Foundation for Justice's Albie Awards.
Amal and George look extraordinary in coordinating black-tie looks. And in a red-carpet interview, they reveal how they celebrated their milestone wedding anniversary.
September 1, 2024: They hit the red carpet for Wolfs.
Amal and George are all smiles for the Venice International Film Festival. They walk the red carpet for Wolfs, George’s movie also starring longtime pal Brad Pitt.
December 14, 2023: They have date night at NYC's Polo Bar.
Something feels very right about this gorgeous couple getting easy reservations to the starriest bar in town.
August 31, 2023: Amal gushes about George at the DVF Awards.
At the 2023 DVF Leadership Awards, Amal is recognized for her work in human rights. According to People, she dedicates part of her speech to George, gushing, “I just wanted to say, you, my love, like this city, take my breath away and you make our lives magical. It is sometimes hard to believe you exist, so thank you for being the brightest light in my life.”
October 17, 2022: The Clooneys return to the red carpet.
After the pandemic, the world needs healing, and George and Julia Roberts give it to us with their feel-good romantic comedy, Ticket to Paradise.
For the Los Angeles premiere, Amal is radiant in a red dress with a tropical print, plus a rouge lip. And she stays by George’s side during the rest of the movie’s press run.
September 27, 2022: They celebrate their eighth anniversary.
George and Amal share a story they’ve told before: When George was courting Amal he wrote emails from the perspective of his dog, pretending that the pup needed a human rights lawyer to rescue him.
George also jokes, “She screwed my life up!” He had a bachelor life and now he has twins running around.
February 8, 2022: The Clooneys, and their Clooney Foundation For Justice, win a Catalyst Award.
The pair mark the occasion with a joint thank you speech. Amal says, “The funding we receive will support our TrialWatch program, which monitors criminal trials around the world and defends individuals who are unjustly detained, including journalists, women, LGBTQ persons, and minorities.”
George adds, “Our goal at the foundation is to free the innocent and punish the guilty.”
January 29, 2021: George says he and Amal write each other love letters.
In an interview with AARP, George reveals that even in quarantine, he and Amal made efforts to be romantic. “Even in lockdown, I’ll write a letter and slip it on her desk, or she’ll write a letter and leave it under the pillow,” he says. “I’m a big believer in letters.”
December 2, 2020: George, once again, says he and Amal don't fight, not even during the pandemic.
On the cover of People, George gives America a bit of a pep talk after a hard pandemic year. The cover reads: “I believe in the American Spirit.” George talks about the importance of fighting for the things we believe in and making the world a better placee—something he takes very seriously, for his kids.
He also talks about how he and Amal got along during the COVID-19 pandemic. “We haven’t ever had an argument,” he says. “You know, everybody’s been slammed together because of the coronavirus and a lot of friends’ relationships have been tested. For us, it’s been really easy.”
May 10, 2019: George jokes around about his kids on Ellen.
George affably jokes with Ellen DeGeneres about raising two-year-old twins, whom he swears are not in their terrible twos, but are actually really advanced for their age because they got Amal’s brains (and her British accent).
June 7, 2018: Amal gives a speech as George wins an AFI Lifetime Achievement Award.
Amal gives a touching a speech celebrating her husband—it is the first time she speaks about him publicly. “Here are a few things you might not know about George: first, he is a gentleman,” she says. “He is a gentleman in every sense of the word and in a way that seems so rare these days and perhaps even outdated.”
May 19, 2018: The pair attend the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
George and Amal show up for Harry and Meghan and look just as royal as them while doing so. Amal wears a canary-yellow dress from Stella McCarthy with a matching hat, while George is sharp in a gray suit and yellow-and-white tie that matches his wife’s look.
April 10, 2018: Amal gets her first major magazine cover.
Amal makes a statement on the cover of Vogue. The story dives into her marriage with George, as well as into her career as a respected lawyer and passionate humanitarian.
March 24, 2018: They attend the March For Our Lives.
Although we love to see them on the red carpet, the Clooneys are first and foremost politically-conscious citizens. The pair attend the “March For Our Lives” in Washington, D.C.
February 9, 2018: George recalls their meeting.
George has told the story of how he met Amal before, but he adds a little spice for David Letterman’s show, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction. Apparently, George’s agent called him and said, “I met this woman who’s coming to your house, who you’re gonna marry” before anything between them had ever happened.
I mean, who knows you better than your agent?
September 2, 2017: They attend the Venice Film Festival.
The couple make their first appearance after the birth of their twins at the Venice Film Festival.
June 6, 2017: The pair welcome their twins, Ella and Alexander.
The “bachelor for life” is now a dad. The couple release a statement saying, “This morning Amal and George welcomed Ella and Alexander Clooney into their lives. Ella, Alexander and Amal are all healthy, happy and doing fine. George is sedated and should recover in a few days.”
February 9, 2017: Amal is expecting.
Julie Chen breaks the news that George and Amal were expecting twins on her show The Talk.
“Here’s the truth of the matter,” she tells Entertainment Tonight. “My husband and I saw George and Amal about almost three weeks ago and they casually mentioned that they were expecting twins. We were all like, ‘Is it a secret?’ and George kind of went, ‘No.’ But we didn’t feel right telling anybody.”
September 27, 2016: They celebrate their wedding anniversary.
George jokes to E! News that they threw a huge celebration with fireworks, then admits that he actually just made Amal dinner. “I don’t think she’s ever quite impressed with my cooking. If I slap something together—spaghetti and meatballs—she doesn’t know that it comes in a jar, so I can just fool her with that,” he chides.
September 20, 2016: The couple go to the UN.
George and Amal attended a Leaders Summit for Refugees during the United Nations 71st session of the General Debate at the United Nations General Assembly.
August 23, 2015: The Clooneys show PDA at the Casamigos launch party.
George launches his Casamigos tequila in Ibiza, and Amal is by his side while in a gleaming gold gown with a plunging neckline.

May 9, 2015: They attend the Tomorrowland premiere with a special guest.
George and Amal bring the barrister’s niece, Mia, to the premiere of George’s film Tomorrowland in Anaheim, California.
May 4, 2015: The Clooneys attend their first Met Gala together.
The theme of the night is “China: Through The Looking Glass,” and Amal is stunning in a red John Galliano for Maison Margiela gown for her first stroll up the carpeted Met steps.
January 11, 2015: They make their Golden Globes debut.
George is the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award winner, and Amal supports him while looking like a princess in a Dior Haute Couture gown. The married pair look so in love following their honeymoon.
September 27, 2014: They tie the knot in Venice.
The duo say “I do” in Venice. It is a lavish, three-day affair, fit for Hollywood royalty. For the wedding, George wears a Giorgio Armani suit and Amal a white custom Oscar de la Renta gown. Matt Damon, Bill Murray, Bono, and many other celebrities attend the wedding.
September 7, 2014: They make their official debut as a couple.
George and Amal debut their relationship at the Celebrity Fight Night charity event in Tuscany, where Amal also shows off her seven-carat, emerald cut diamond engagement ring.
In a speech, George mentions his fiancée, saying, “I met my lovely bride-to-be here in Italy, whom I will be marrying, in a couple of weeks, in Venice, of all places.”
April 26, 2014: The world finds out that George has proposed.
News breaks that George has proposed to Amal. Later, during an appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, he will jokingly describe the proposal as a “horrible” moment for him. George explains that he had planned a romantic proposal and had cooked dinner for Amal, but everything about his plans went wrong and the proposal ended up being a 25-minute long disaster.
Still, the most important part turned out okay, and Amal said yes.
March 2014: The new couple go on romantic adventures.
George and Amal spend March of 2014 jet-setting and enjoying their new romance. The couple take a trip to the Seychelles, to Tanzania, and then to New York City, where they reportedly have a romantic stay at the Carlyle Hotel. Later in the month, they are spotted at Soho House in West Hollywood, California.
July 2013: George and Amal meet.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, years later, George reveals that he met Amal in July 2013 in Lake Como, Italy. “I thought she was beautiful, and I thought she was funny and obviously smart.” When asked what she thought of him, he joked, “I don’t know. She probably thought I was old.”
