Everything to Know About the 2022 Met Gala

Following 2020's cancelation and last year's postponement and scale-down, the year's most anticipated event in fashion is returning to normal scheduling in New York, and we're already counting down the days.

Referred to as the "Oscars of Fashion," the Met Costume Institute Gala, or Met Gala, is fashion's biggest occasion and a time of utmost extravagance for A-listers—who flaunt larger-than-life looks from top-tier designers and houses based around the gala's annual theme, all while raising millions in $35,000 tickets for the Met's Costume Institute.

For the first time since 2019, the gala will be back at both its usual location and date at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on the first Monday of May. At best, the hiatus will mean an extra dial-up on this year's opulence, as well as yet more moments going down in fashion history.

Who's hosting this year?

It was announced March 17 that this year's gala hosts will include Lin-Manuel Miranda and Regina King, as well as Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds. We're already looking forward to more romantic moments from our favorite Hollywood couple on the carpet.

What is the theme?

The dress code is "Gilded Glamour," but the theme, "In America," is a continuation of the Costume Institute's premier two-part exhibition—beginning with last year's "A Lexicon of Fashion"—which explores and commemorates American fashion and designers. Part two of the exhibition, "An Anthology of Fashion," is set to center on "sartorial narratives that relate to the complex and layered histories" of the nation's formative eras, per the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and opens next month at the Met's American Wing period rooms.

If the looks from last year are any indication, then we can expect yet more creative and intriguing sartorial expressions of the American condition. For the lexicon, many gala looks channeled the language and state of today's quintessential American in various ways, from pieces scrawled in explicit sociopolitical commentary (Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Cara Delevingne)—and Megan Fox's more literal take as an American girl in an American number—to Kim Kardashian's largely off-script though buzzy head-to-toe-black Balenciaga bodysuit.

For the anthology, gala looks may delve further into America's past if it follows suit from the exhibition. But the specific theme of the night will be Gilded Glamour—so prepare to likely bask in more Old Hollywood moments with a touch of some extravagant, glitzy gold.

Who is attending?

Like every year, the exclusive, curated list of attendees includes fashion and culture's biggest A-list figures, from actresses and models to designers, stylists, and other trailblazing entrepreneurs.

While this year's guest list is still largely under wraps, Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson are expected to make their couple's debut at the gala, flaunting what we can only expect will be an Internet-buzzing coordinated ensemble. Though, Kim is still remaining coy about the plans. "You're going to have to wait and find out [if we attend together]," she told Access Hollywood on April 7. "I think we're still figuring it out!"

She added, about her potential look, "I think [if I go, it will] be up to the last minute, because it can't be tailored. So I have to fit in it exactly. So we will see if I can shapeshift for the night."
