Stranger Things' Finn Wolfhard (AKA Mike Wheeler) is on track to become a TV star and a rock star at the same time. The 15-year-old released his first official song with this rock band, Calpurnia, today, kicking off what we hope is a lasting music career.
The track, "City Boy," is a psych rock-inspired tune with an old-school West Coast vibe. The lyrics are simple: "I am a city boy / You are a city girl / You date the city tool / I am a city fool," Wolfhard sings in the chorus.
Calpurnia is gearing up to release an EP later this year. The project was recorded in Chicago and produced by Twin Peaks' Cadien Lake James, which likely explains the group's indie rock sound. The music video gives fans a glimpse of the band's studio time with James, which apparently includes doodling on guitars, playing with fake eyeball props, and snapping photos on a disposable camera.
The four-piece Vancouver-based band consists of Wolfhard (vocals and guitar) and fellow talented teens, Ayla Tesler-Mabe (lead guitar), Jack Anderson (bassist), and Malcolm Craig (drums). The quartet, who grew up within walking distance of each other, started out jamming and covering songs before they decided to write and record originals.
"We all just really clicked," Wolfhard said of the group in a statement. "And when I'm passionate about something I like to get it done as quickly as I can. There's not a lot of wasting time. I love just going for it. Go big or go home."
Wolfhard isn't the only Stranger Things star with ties to music. Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin) once portrayed Gavroche in Les Misérables on Broadway and also has a band of his own, called Work in Progress. Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas) is also a Broadway vet who starred as young Simba in The Lion King, and played a young Ricky Bell in BET's New Edition biopic.
Noah Schnapp (Will) had a viral moment when he joined Panic! at the Disco onstage last year. Joe Keery (Steve) also used to be in a band, Post Animal, but left due to scheduling conflicts and to dissociate Stranger Things from the group. And Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven) may not be an official music star yet, but she is definitely a rap queen in the making.
