1) Casino, 1995
Giving the mob scene a glamorous makeover, the 1995 film starring Robert De Niro, Sharon Stone and Joe Pesci chronicled the 1970s Las Vegas scene of money, greed and gambling. Stealing the show in this film, however, is Sharon Stone as Ginger McKenna, an ex-trophy wife and rival to De Niro's character, Ace Rothstein. Stone's incredible '70s-inspired wardrobe was helmed by costume designer Rita Ryack, who created over 30 costume changes for Stone's character alone. From glamorous furs to sequined gowns and go-go boots, Stone's wardrobe is a fashion feast.
2) Pulp Fiction, 1994
The fashion set still channels the iconic movie wardrobe worn by Mia Wallace (Uma Thurman) in Pulp Fiction. From her crisp white button-down shirt to her blunt bangs and bob, Uma Thurman's movie style was the new femme-fatale look of the decade. The much-referenced outfit starred in one of the most famous film dance scenes of all time, with Thurman getting down opposite John Travolta.
3) Clueless, 1995
With a computerized, virtual closet, the coolest wardrobe at school and a serious talent for shopping, Cher Horowitz (Alicia Silverstone) was the spirit animal of every girl throughout the '90s (and still to this day). From her iconic yellow plaid suit to that red Alaia dress, Cher's movie style perfectly embodied the high school teenager of the '90s. Clueless marked costume designer Mona May's first feature film, which she turned into a reel of looks that went on to influence the fashion of the decade. Plus, it gave us an abundance of movie quotes we still use to this day. Case in point: "As if!"
4) Pretty Woman, 1990
From patent over-the-knee boots, a cut-out dress and a short blonde wig to a designer-filled wardrobe, Julia Roberts undergoes the ultimate '90s Cinderella makeover as Vivian, a Los Angeles prostitute hired by wealthy businessman Edward (Richard Gere). Throughout the romantic comedy, Vivian's wardrobe is transformed after several shopping trips in Beverly Hills (thanks to Edward) into that of a sophisticated lady—although her over-the-knee boots still left a mark on the fashion world after this film.
5) Unzipped, 1995
One of the earlier looks into the fashion world, this 1995 documentary followed Isaac Mizrahi as he planned his fall 1994 collection. The behind-the-scenes film lends a look into the '90s fashion industry and is filled with several cameos from iconic supers including Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Kate Moss and Cindy Crawford.
6) The Virgin Suicides, 1999
Marking Sofia Coppola's first feature film, The Virgin Suicides chronicles the lives of five innocent teenage sisters living in the 1970s and the boys who are infatuated with them. Costume designer Nancy Steiner worked with Coppola to create a wardrobe that perfectly blended the '70s and '90s for fashions that still feel relevant to this day, including delicate lace dresses, floral prints and maxi hemlines.
7) Romy & Michele's High School Reunion, 1997
10 years after their high school graduation, best friends Romy and Michele are determined to attend their reunion looking as successful as possible. The token BFFs haven't accomplished all they hoped they would in their careers. Instead, they live together and make their own clothes in crazy colors and silhouettes that don't exactly "blend in" with their peers. In hopes of impressing their fellow classmates who bullied them in high school, they create a lie that spirals out of control. In this light comedy, the fashion is full of daring looks and zany styles that Romy and Michele embrace as their own—serving as the ultimate motivation for being your own fashion risk-taker.
8) Basic Instinct, 1992
Sharon Stone plays the ultimate femme fatale villain in this 1992 thriller. Starring as crime novelist Catherine Tramell, Stone's character is under investigation for the murder of her former boyfriend by homicide detective Nick Curran (Michael Douglas). Stone plays the ultimate mystery woman with the perfect amount of sultriness, sex appeal and style. Her character's minimalist '90s wardrobe is still referenced to this day thanks to that iconic, all-white sleeveless turtleneck dress she wears while being interrogated by police (plus, her infamous crossing and uncrossing of her bare legs in the scene can't be missed).
9) Jawbreaker, 1999
If Mean Girls got a 1990s makeover, this would be it. Jawbreaker follows a high school full of drama—and a popular clique that serves as the fashion inspiration. From crop tops to floral slip dresses and plaid mini skirts, the wardrobes are quintessential '90s teenage fashion, especially when the three popular girls—Courtney (Rose McGowan), Julie (Rebecca Gayheart) and Marcie (Julie Benz)—take the school nerd, Fern Mayo (Judy Greer), under their wing for a "fashion makeover."
10) Ready to Wear (Pret-A-Porter), 1994
Poking fun at the fashion industry, this satirical 1994 film takes place in Paris during Fashion Week and highlights the drama, connections and seduction of the fashion industry. Ready to Wear is most known for its incredible amount of celebrity cameos, which include Sophia Loren, Kim Basinger, Lauren Bacall, Julia Roberts, Helena Christensen, Cher and a handful of top designers of the time.
11) The Craft, 1996
Tapping into the goth and grunge trends of the decade, The Craft follows four teenage misfit friends who want to be witches. Tapping into the whole "witchy woman" aesthetic, the movie fashion worked in the trends of the time—from plaid and chokers to crosses and a full-on embrace of goth. This wasn't for the girls who connected with Cher Horowitz or Jawbreaker's girly cast—this was for the badass chicks of the '90s.
12) Cruel Intentions, 1999
Reese Witherspoon, Ryan Philippe and Sarah Michelle Gellar star in this warped love-triangle drama. Both Witherspoon and Gellar have enviable wardrobes in the movie as they play polar-opposite characters. Gellar's character has a natch for wearing lingerie as daywear, oversized hats and sunglasses—still serving as bad girl sartorial inspiration to this day. Witherspoon's innocent, virgin character, meanwhile, offsets her with a love of pastels, pigtail braids and headbands before Blair Waldorf made them trendy. Whether you're a good girl or bad, there's '90s style inspiration for everyone in this movie.
13) The Talented Mr. Ripley, 1999
Nominated for the 1999 Best Costume Design Academy Award, The Talented Mr. Ripley features an A-list cast including Gwyneth Paltrow, Matt Damon, Jude Law and Cate Blanchett dressed by costume designers Gary Jones and Ann Roth. Departing from the trendy teen-aged high school and grunge and goth fashion of the decade, this 1999 thriller's fashion offers the perfect Riveria-inspired style. With a dark, thrilling plot line, the movie's fashion takes a different route with chic, nautical- and resort-inspired pieces that are hard to ignore during scenes atop boats, beaches and pretty cobble-stone streets. The crisp white shirts that Paltrow ties on during warm summer days remain relevant in summer fashion to this day.
