Anytime Michelle Yeoh steps onto a red carpet the fashion world takes notice. The Malaysian actress, who got her start in the '80s starring in action and martial arts films (yes, she performed her own stunts), exudes a certain type of elegance that is at once classic and impossible to replicate.
On last year’s press tour for the film adaptation of the Broadway musical Wicked, in which Yeoh portrays Madame Morrible, the headmistress of Crage Hall at Shiz University, the actor leaned into the witchier side of glamour, wearing long gowns in black and green and accented with healthy dashes of diamonds.
But at this year’s Academy Awards, which Yeoh attended in support of the film, the actress opted for a strapless Balenciaga gown in an invigorating shade of Matisse blue. Artful draping and a long train added to the drama.
“Celebrating the success of Wicked [at the Oscars] with my fellow cast mates is a dream come true,” Yeoh tells Harper’s Bazaar. “Wearing this custom Balenciaga Couture gown from [Creative Director] Demna Gvasalia’s 52nd collection was so special. I loved wearing a shade of blue I’d yet to explore during any awards season and the train made it feel very elevated.”
To accessorize, Yeoh wore Boucheron's diamond encrusted Plume de Paon asymmetrical earrings, Plume de Paon ring, and Quatre Radiant Edition tie-necklace. She also outfitted her left wrist with a pavé watch by Richard Mille for a sporty touch.
Wicked ultimately took home the awards for Best Production Design and Best Costume Design.
Yeoh won her first Oscar in 2023 for her role as Evelyn Quan Wang in Everything Everywhere All at Once. Importantly, it marked the first time an Asian actress had won Best Actress at the awards show. That night, Yeoh wore a feathery organza gown by Dior Haute Couture. And glinting on her wrist? You guessed it: another diamond timepiece. We can't wait to see what next year's award season will bring.
