Each print issue of Harper’s Bazaar features “In the Market,” a column highlighting the best new items of the season, shot behind the scenes in the Bazaar fashion closet. For the height of spring, senior fashion and accessories editor Jaclyn Alexandra Cohen gives us an up-close look at the season’s best floral bags.
Is it me, or are floral bags suddenly everywhere? Spring fashion always embraces florals, of course, but this season designers seem to be leaning especially hard on blooms—specifically when it comes to bags. Some of our favorite carryalls this season use floral motifs in new and unexpected ways, from Versace's 3D flowers made of suede to Erdem's elegant bud-shaped brass bag handle. Alessandro Michele offered needlepoint embroidered dark florals, while Staud gave us beaded shoulder bags.
The range is endless, but one thing's for sure—all of these bags are works of art. Below, I break down my 11 favorite bags across five categories.
Minimalist Floral Top Handles
This fall, Erdem launched its first bag ever, the Bloom, with the most beautiful flower-bud handle hardware. Edie Parker continued the theme with sleek, tulip-handled purses in sophisticated colors. Both would look chicest with a midi floral dress (like the Prada that Hunter Schaffer just wore on the red carpet) to help you fully lean into the all-over floral trend for spring.
Embroidered Dark Floral Bags
There's something so '70s about dark floral bags like Alessandro Michele's needlepoint fringe shoulder bag for Valentino, or Etro's flower-and-paisley embroidered top handle. These bohemian styles would pair perfectly come spring with wide-leg palazzo-style trousers in cotton or linen and a pointelle t-shirt (Leset makes my favorite!), but you could carry them well into fall, too. As for Susan Alexandra's sweet, whimsical snap-closure version, I like the idea of carrying it to soften up a spring suiting look for an evening cocktail.
Light Floral Starter Bags
Light florals were a huge trend on the spring runways. In bag form, these silky options feel very '90s. Jimmy Choo's starter bag would look precious with a knit mini dress and Mary Jane flats. Susan Alexandra's sweet shoulder bag feels somewhat Cher Horowitz, and in that vein would work well with a pencil skirt (midi length for a modern touch), worn with a t-shirt tucked in, a sweater tied around the neck, and ballet flats.
3D Floral Bags
If you can't carry around actual cut flowers, these sculptural carryalls are the next best thing. Staud's bucket bag offers a playful take on the idea of a market tote with lilies popping out the top. This statement bag does all the talking and would look best with denim on denim, finished with a simple kitten heel. Versace's suede shoulder bag is a bit more abstract and would look coolest dressed down with a cardigan, a white tank top, and jeans.
Beaded Floral Evening Bags
For a statement evening bag that looks like a work of art, you can't go wrong with a beaded bag. Try one of Staud's shoulder bags with a soft colored maxi dress for sunset drinks by the water. For a more formal evening affair, Valentino's crystalized clutch will dress up any gown or cocktail dress.
