The Best Fall Sweaters to Shop, According to Bazaar Editors

Cozy knits to wear this season—and next

By

Fall just might be my favorite season. The air is crisp, with windy mornings calling for the return of hot coffee and warm knits. The best fall sweaters keep you toasty, yes, but they also make getting dressed fun—important for those days when the chill makes you want to prolong the start by staying in bed just a few minutes longer.

Over the years, I’ve accumulated my fair share of cardigans, crewnecks, and countless black turtlenecks, but I can always find one more to add to my collection. The essential layer is constantly being reinvented with innovative patterns, fresh colorways, and statement prints. And since it’s likely to be the first (and only) thing you’ll see me in now that the weather is cooling down, it makes finding one that makes me feel cozy and put-together especially important.

Turns out I’m not alone in my passion for a good knit. I asked around the office, and our team enthusiastically started sharing their take on the best fall sweaters, from minimalist wardrobe essentials to funkier pieces that command a room and will undoubtedly start a conversation. There is a mix of cropped and oversized silhouettes crafted from impossibly soft cashmere and equally soft cotton selects for those with sensitive skin. Each is worth adding to your closet right now.

Below, Bazaar editors’ favorite fall sweaters for 2024 and beyond.

Khaite Scarlet Cashmere-Blend Cardigan

Scarlet Cashmere-Blend Cardigan

“Every year, I’ve been guilty of purchasing sweaters that unfortunately usually end up in the donation bin, due to poor quality and quick pilling. While I know the sweater’s price point is very steep, its exceptional quality, craftsmanship, and warmth have made it a reliable hero piece in my wardrobe. Whether I’m wearing it to the office with sleek trousers, on long-haul flights with leggings, or simply as a sweater I throw on over my slipdress on cool fall nights, its timelessness, versatility, and elegance have been a lifesaver during the fall and winter.
