We're keeping an eye on the emerging micro-trends on the runway under the die-hard rule of: when you see three, call it.

1

Fall is Favoring Feminine Florals

When we think of fall it's often through autumnal hued lenses, but designers have something lighter in mind. At Sies Marjan, Rosie Assoulin and Brock Collection, ultra-feminine florals are taking center stage on dresses and off-the-shoulder tops. Seasons are suddenly a figment of our imaginations anyway—why not rock that floral top?

Is it a commentary on global warming, a nod towards sustainable fashion or simply an appreciation for high gloss? It's impossible to say for certain, but designers are embracing shiny black plastic bag-inspired pieces. Monse and Rosie Assoulin opted for skirts in leather and pleather respectively that provide all of the glistening appeal and lightness of a cinch sack gone luxe while Narciso Rodriguez showed a poncho jacket with similar affect.

We've seen the tassel belt, the obi belt, the vintage inspired belt favored by Kendall Jenner. But it seems like fall is truly putting the belt in the spotlight—and it's simple in form and waist-cinching in function. Worn with contrasting black and white at Derek Lam and Saint Laurent and over a coat at Rodarte, it's a truly flattering piece that feels right on time.

There's no arguing the power of a great classic—and the peacoat in particular is certain to show up on any top ten lists of items all women should own. And now designers are taking it cropped. Tommy Hilfiger, Frame Denim and Tibi all opted for never-fail navy with nautical buttons—all the better to show off your flares or midi skirt.

If streetwear is the reigning star of the style show, the hoodie is its piece de resistance. And now you'll be able to hoodie-and-go with new iterations in dress form. The sporty classic showed up longer and cooler at Fenty x Puma, in a dress that Rihanna could rock at any moment; in bold pink at Lacoste; and zippered and floor length at Public School. In other words, the hoodie just got a dose of drama to go with all that attitude.

Mercury Rising

Spring's palettes were like a gateway drug to all things shiny for fall. The metal currently taking center stage is mercury. Adam Selman layered a silvery tank under sheer black, Monse put theirs on a standout parka and Cushnie et Ochs went full metal on a sultry cocktail dress. The results are looks that appear that they could liquify at your feet—and are just a little bit dangerous.
