The era of the no-groni is here: occasion drinks without alcohol that deserve to be housed in as sculpted glassware as any spirited cocktail. There has been an increasing number of people turning to designer non-alcoholic beverages in line with the rise in quality. When I was pregnant with my first child almost a decade ago, I remember asking the barman at a very excellent establishment if he could make me something dry. He proudly brandished a concoction that looked like a tequila sunrise that mainly consisted of orange juice. I opted for a tonic water – with a decorative lime wedge, to give some semblance of drama. Of course the launch of the botanical Seedlip was a game-changer for introducing craft to the category, elevating the state of being teetotal, or drinking less, in multitudinous ways.

Now, however, we are spoilt for choice. And in any season, when temptation calls at us from all directions, we would do well to remember what’s on offer. For those catering at home, there’s Crodino, the non-alcoholic bitter aperitif, made by Gruppo Campari, as well as Botivo and also the excellent non-alcoholic gin Pentire.

As part of Soho House’s emphasis on wellness this year, it has launched a particularly good range for the new year. Its menu of ‘no and low cocktails’ are perfect for those who like the craft of a cocktail without the strength of alcohol – indeed, 30 per cent of the drinks menus across all the houses will consist of no- or low-alcohol options.

Bero (pronounced Beero) is the brainchild of the teetotal Spider-Man actor Tom Holland, which the houses will be serving. Already a hit in the US, the Kingston Golden Pils, Edge Hill Hazy IPA and Noon Wheat deliver complex, full-bodied, malty flavours. I’m personally partial to a margarita, and the Skinny Tommy’s Margarita is created with quarter-strength Blanco Agave Spirit. Also on the menu are the Liverner Paloma and our favourite – the Zero-Proof Hibiscus Nogroni, which is served in an exquisite rounded martini glass. There are also NOOH wines – a still and sparkling rosé from the much-loved Château La Coste, and also Gillian Anderson's sparkling g Spot drinks. Kylie Minogue's 0% range will also be served in select Soho Houses across the UK and America – we're particular fans of the Kylie Minogue 0% Sparkling Rosé (which accounts for more than half of the UK’s zero per cent sparkling wine market).

Many pubs and bars have terrific alternatives; we love the Connaught bar, 42 on Albermarle Street and the Punch Room at the Edition. And so, feel confident in your choices, for they are likely to be good ones.
