Not every bride is after a diamond engagement ring – and, while there are plenty of beautiful gemstones to choose from if you are going to divert from the classic choice, you can't get much more special than a pearl.

Officially the oldest known gemstone and the only one created by a living creature, the pearl has long been a symbol of wealth, sophistication and power, with none of the overtly glitzy associations given to other precious gems, making them an elegant choice. The pearl also feels particularly fitting as an engagement ring because they traditionally symbolise wisdom, integrity and loyalty.

Where pearls were once considered old-fashioned, they have been gaining popularity in recent years – particularly when it comes to engagement rings. Ariana Grande and Emma Stone are among the Hollywood starlets to have had a pearl engagement ring, while Jennifer Lopez wore plenty of pearls on her wedding day, and many jewellery brands are incorporating pearls into their most popular designs. Now, Bridgerton's Penelope Featherington has one, something which has reportedly led to a 5,000 per cent surge in Google searches for the style.

Below, we round up some of the most beautiful pearl engagement rings that are available to buy online now. For more engagement ring and wedding inspiration, head this way.
