There’s a reason “golden hour” is so beloved. Aside from being a prime time for taking Instagram selfies, the magical half hour or so before the sun sets can’t be reproduced. But its essence can be bottled, as proven by Ellis Brooklyn’s latest fruity scent, Dear Sky.
“I’ve been spending a bit of time in Texas lately, and my favorite time of day there is the sunset hour when the sky has a radiance to it,” Ellis Brooklyn founder Bee Shapiro tells Bazaar of the new eau de parfum, named after her daughter Sky. “When it’s Texas hot, you need that kind of freshness and radiance to cut through the heat.”
While many sun scents—including Ellis Brooklyn’s Sun hair and body fragrance mist—boast lighter florals and fruits like orange flower and coconut, Dear Sky has a juicier profile. Top notes rhubarb, strawberry leaf, honeydew melon, and bergamot are tempered by white spicy pink pepper, floral white peony, and musky ambrette for a sophisticated take on fruity fragrances. “Sweetness can be cloying, but it’s balanced between the two [fruits] here,” Shapiro explains.
Fruit-forward fragrances have been popular lately, with ingredients ranging from pineapple (featured in Ellis Brooklyn’s recent Miami fragrance) to coconut, a popular summer note, and even tomato. But Dear Sky uses unconventional fruit notes, such as honeydew. “We haven’t used honeydew or strawberry leaf yet,” Shapiro says, “and I liked the idea of taking the idea of a classic category, such as a fruity floral, and making it modern and relevant to today.”
Furthermore, a lot of fruity scents are designed for the warmer months, but Shapiro created Dear Sky to be worn day or night any time of the year.
Dear Sky Eau de Parfum comes in a full size for $115 and a travel size for $33, both available today at ellisbrooklyn.com.
