Disney is making a third installation of The Princess Diaries? Shut. Up.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Aadrita Mukerji (whose writing credits include Supergirl and Reacher) has been recruited to write the script for the long-awaited third movie of the royal franchise, based on Meg Cabot's young adult novelsof the same name. Debra Martin Chase, who produced the first two movies, will return to produce the new Princess Diaries. Meanwhile, Melissa Stack, the screenwriter for The Other Woman, will executive produce.
Sources told the outlet that the forthcoming script will continue the storyline established in the previous movies, rather than completely reboot the franchise. Still, the silver screen homecoming of Genovia's reigning queen, Amelia “Mia” Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi, isn't so certain.
Ahead, everything we know so far.
Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews haven't confirmed their return to the third film.
It's hard to conceive of a Princess Diaries movie without Hathaway or Andrews, who starred as Princess Mia and Queen Clarisse in the original films, but it's possible that the third installment may move forward without them, anyway. Disney has yet to confirm whether or not the duo will reprise their roles—but that doesn't necessarily mean they won't.
In fact, Hathaway has previously expressed interest in stepping back into the character that had first catapulted her into super stardom. “I would more than entertain it, I'm pulling for it,” she told Entertainment Tonight in 2022. “If there's any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work. We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen.”
Andrews, of course, stole viewers's hearts as Clarisse Renaldi, Genovia's queen regent and Mia's grandmother.
Though discussions popped up over the years about a third Princess Diaries movie, Andrews doubted that it would ever come to fruition, especially after the death of the original director, Garry Marshall. “I think it would be too late to do it now,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “There was talk of a sequel many, many years ago. But I don’t think it ever came to pass. And Garry then did leave us. [Marshall died in 2016.] [For] especially me, it’s too far down the line now to go back to it. It’s a lovely thought, but I don’t think it would probably be possible.”
Adele Lim will direct.
Disney has officially tapped Lim to helm the third Princess Diaries movie.
“As a diehard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life,” Lim told Deadline. “We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”
Lim made her directorial debut with the 2023 Lionsgate comedy, Joy Ride, and has previously served as a screenwriter on Disney's 2021 animated film Raya and the Last Dragon and Jon M. Chu's 2018 rom-com Crazy Rich Asians.
The production is in “a good place.”
Though much is still not known about the forthcoming movie, Hathaway teased the project's status in an April 2024 interview with V magazine. “We’re in a good place. That’s all I can say,” she said at the time. “There’s nothing to announce yet. But we’re in a good place.”
