It’s a good time to be Ayo Edebiri.
The 28-year-old actor has already single-handedly won the 2024 award season with a clean sweep of the first three major ceremonies of the year. In just one week, Edebiri has taken home Best Supporting Actress awards at the Golden Globes, the Critics Choice Awards, and as of tonight, also the Emmys, for her performance as Syd in Hulu’s critically acclaimed series The Bear. Her win marks just the third time in the Emmys’ 74-year history a Black woman has won in the Outstanding Supporting Actress category, after Jackée Harry won in 1987, for 227, and Sheryl Lee Ralph in 2022, for Abbott Elementary. Edebiri’s Bear costars Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach also took home Emmys for their work on the series (for Outstanding Actor and Supporting Actor, respectively, in a Comedy Series) later in the ceremony.
While this year’s Emmys are strictly limiting winners’ speeches to 45 seconds tonight, Edebiri still won over the crowd with her signature deadpan humor during her brief time onstage.
“This is a show about family—found family and real family—and my parents are here tonight! I’m making them sit kind of far away from me because I’m a bad kid,” she joked. “I love you guys so much. Thank you so much for loving me and letting me feel beautiful and Black and proud of all of that. I love you so much. It’s probably not a dream to emigrate to this country and have your child be like, ‘I wanna do improv!’ But you’re real ones.”
