We’re not ready to grow up, and thankfully, Disney is taking us back to the early ’00s with one of the most nostalgic movies of that time: 2003’s Freaky Friday.
Rumors of a sequel swirled for years after stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan both expressed interest in reprising their roles as mother-daughter duo Tess and Anna Coleman. Then, it was confirmed last summer that a follow-up was in the works, with both lead actors, as well as a few of their costars, set to return.
Now, Freakier Friday is almost here, with the film set to hit theaters on August 8. Ahead, see everything we know about the freaky sequel.
Freakier Friday will arrive on August 8, 2025.
On almost the exact 22nd anniversary of the first film’s release (which landed in U.S. theaters on August 6, 2003), Freakier Friday will arrive on August 8, 2025.
While some Disney sequels have gotten the straight-to-streaming treatment (like Hocus Pocus 2), Disney confirmed that the Freaky Friday sequel would hit theaters in an Instagram post last summer.
“The Colemans are back and coming to theaters in 2025!” the caption read. “The sequel to Freaky Friday is now in production!”
The official trailer includes a few winks to the original film.
Disney has unveiled the official trailer for Freakier Friday, which sees our protagonists getting all mixed up with a new generation. But fear not, because even though there have been some changes for the Colemans, it’s clear the writers haven’t forgotten what made the 2003 classic so beloved. Check out the full clip above (body slamming and all).
Most of the cast will reprise their roles (joined by a few new faces).
In addition to Lohan and Curtis, many cast members from the original film will reprise their roles in the Freakier Friday, including Mark Harmon as Ryan, Chad Michael Murray as Jake, Stephen Tobolowsky as Elton Bates, Christina Vidal as Maddie, Haley Hudson as Peg, Rosalind Chao as Pei-Pei, and Lucille Soong as Pei-Pei’s mother.
And a few new stars have been added to the sequel’s cast, including Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, best known as the star of Netflix sitcom Never Have I Ever (another title that explores the complicated relationships between mothers and their teenage daughters), Julia Butters (The Fabelmans), Sophia Hammons (The Social Dilemma), and Manny Jacinto (The Good Place).
Nisha Ganatra is directing.
Nisha Ganatra has been confirmed as the director of Freakier Friday, and it will be her first feature-film directing credit since 2020’s The High Note. Other films Ganatra has helmed include Late Night, The Hunters, Chutney Popcorn, and Cosmopolitan.
On the TV side, she has directed episodes of a number of critically acclaimed comedy series, including Girls, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Shameless, and The Mindy Project. For her work on the Amazon dramedy Transparent, she received a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series.
Jordan Weiss (Dollface) will be writing the screenplay. (The first Freaky Friday was directed by Mark Waters, and the screenplay was written by Heather Hach and Leslie Dixon, adapted from the 1972 children’s novel of the same name by Mary Rodgers.)
The plot includes a double body-swap.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Ganatra put out a casting call in spring 2024 looking to fill the role of Anna’s daughter Harper in the new film. In the casting call, Harper was described as “a tomboy with a sharp sense of humor [who’s] in a bit of a mood these days because her longtime single mom is set to marry British restaurateur Eric Davis.” The description also noted that Eric has his own teenage daughter, Lily, who does not totally see “eye to eye” with Harper.
Now, as confirmed by the trailer, it appears the film will follow Tess and Anna as they accidentally switch bodies with the two teenage girls. Talk about double body-swapping trouble.
Disney has released a series of first-look photos.
