Kamala Harris was balanced and poised as she walked into Donald Trump’s inauguration today arm-in-arm with her president, Joe Biden.
Biden joined his fellow Democrats in wearing a sharp blue suit. But rather than following the color scheme, Harris chose a strong and elegant all-black look composed of a collared zip-up jacket, tailored trousers, pointed heels, and black-pearl earrings. Whether she wore it in mourning or in empowerment, it made a statement.
Both Biden and the vice president end their terms today, as Trump takes office for the second time, now with JD Vance as his vice president.
After Biden stepped down from the presidential race in 2024, Harris took over, running a fierce and noble race against Trump.
The Democratic National Convention brought waves of prominent Democrats, including the Obamas and the Clintons, come together to support and campaign for Harris. It also brought a sea of entertainment personalities—from Taylor Swift to Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, Julia Roberts, and Eminem—champion Harris and plead for voters to support human rights over intolerance, and good over evil.
Still, Trump persevered, having won both the Electoral College and the popular vote over Harris. In her concession speech, Harris said: “I know many people feel like we are entering a dark time. I hope … that is not the case. But if it is, let us fill the sky with the light of a brilliant, brilliant, billion of stars.”
The Democrat, who would have been the country’s first female president, assured her supporters that despite her loss, the fight is far from over.
“And, while I concede this election, I do not concede the fight that fueled this campaign,” Harris said, to cheers from her audience. “Sometimes the fight takes a while—that doesn’t mean we won’t win. Don’t ever give up. Don’t ever listen when someone says something is impossible because it has never been done before.”
