Each print issue of Harper’s Bazaar features “In the Market,” a column highlighting the best new items of the season, shot behind the scenes in the Bazaar fashion closet. For the height of spring, senior fashion and accessories editor Jaclyn Alexandra Cohen gives us an up-close look at the season’s best ties.
Ever since Diane Keaton in Woody Allen's Annie Hall, there's been something so cool about women wearing ties to round out power suiting. Ties have commanded attention on the red carpet, too: Consider Julia Roberts at the 47th Golden Globes in 1990, then fast forward to the 2025 82nd Golden Globes where Ayo Edebiri wore a similar version with a twist from Loewe.
This season, neckties for women were all over the runway. Saint Laurent showed '80s-style suiting and tailored separates accompanied with ties in pinstripes and strong-yet-muted shades, while Thom Browne and Burberry offered preschool-approved checkered and ribbon striped ties.
There are so many approaches to finding the best tie for you, and so many ways to wear them to fit your personal aesthetic. Below I break down the six categories of modern ties for women, and explain how to style all of them.
’80s Power Suit Ties
When Hailey Bieber stepped out in a full Saint Laurent suit (with a tie, of course) for her Rhode Skin launch event back in the fall, she made a strong case that power suiting isn't dead. We saw this driven home by the house's Spring 2025 collection, where ties accompanied not just suits but also tailored separates and cool-girl uniform outfits that included bombers and oversized shirts. While this look is perfect for the office, it doubles as a new way of evening dressing for the spring.
Striped School-Uniform Ties
Ties with ribbon stripes in bold colors are a prep school-approved hero accessory that can help update a modern uniform look. Whether worn with your favorite khaki slacks and styled with a light cardigan sweater, or paired with light shirting and a classic pencil skirt, these colors add a pop to an otherwise subtle look.
Heritage Check Ties
Burberry's classic checkered ties feel like the perfect accessory for leaning into the English countryside trend. Try wearing one with jodhpur-style pants for an equestrian twist, or tie one on with a classic English tailored button-down, a transitional barn jacket, and flats.
Silk Polka-Dotted Ties
There's something so swanky about a silk polka-dotted ties! Try contrasting one of these with blue classic shirting to balance the otherwise quirky pattern and colors. I love the idea of wearing a silk tie tucked into a neutral pencil skirt with kitten heels for a modern office look with a twist.
Elevated Wall Street Ties
Dress to close the deal this spring with ties that come in bold reds or graphic patterns.
I like to wear this kind of bold tie with tailored daywear separates—ideally more fitted than oversized—to create a look that's polished yet fashion-forward. You could also tuck your shirt into an asymmetrical skirt for a softer look overall.
Directional Leather Ties
Maybe the coolest way to add a necktie into your rotation is with a leather one that offers a twist on a buttoned-up classic. These work well with a shirt and a blazer paired with jeans, the way Kallmeyer showed them this past Fashion Week.
