For Fall 2022, Catherine Holstein stepped into the light. The Khaite designer traded last season’s moody, subterranean show space for a bright white gallery in the Meatpacking District. Being able to actually see next season’s cool girl wardrobe staples (like crystal embellished knitwear and swagged miniskirts) was definitely a vibe.
“The Fall 2022 collection has an immediacy to it,” says Holstein. “There’s a rising action, a feeling of steeping out into a changed world—a waking city—and wanting to be seen. It feels both meditative and fast, sharper and stronger and ultimately very satisfying.”
From the richly textured dresses and tops made with a traditional smocking technique to a sequined gown worn with the ease of a T-shirt, these were clothes that practically demanded to be seen. There were Holstein’s signature sweetheart necklines, of course, here worn entirely off the shoulder. Ruffles were also a recurrent motif, adding dimension to hems and even forming the structure of a sculpted bandeau top.
Handbags, a growing category in the Khaite world, included the soft hobo shapes we’ve come to know and love as well as the new Eloise box bag worn on a chain strap and gold-framed minaudières.
Outerwear is always a specialty of the brand, and as we prepare to step confidently into a brighter future, Holstein provided some inviting options that featured patent finishes or cozy shearling trims. A series of cropped leather puffer jackets looked like an even better version of your favorite moto jacket.
