For a long time, sneakers were the first shoe I reached for when I’d be on my feet all day. But lately, my clogs have been giving my beloved Air Force 1s some competition. Birkenstock Boston clogs and furry slip-ons from Ancient Greek Sandals are my go-to pairs when I’m running an errand in the neighborhood or taking out my compost. And I am not alone.
“A few years back, it was a trend that only a few people dared to wear, and that was mostly at home or in the garden,” says Christina Martini, founder and creative director of Ancient Greek Sandals. “There was a definite shift last season with many designers offering their version of the style, both on the runway and off. Now they have become a staple in every wardrobe. Practical, comfortable, and cool, I believe they are here to stay.”
The new generation of designer clogs looks good. So, good, in fact, that I almost bought a pair of Hermès clogs on the RealReal. But you don’t need to start there. If you’re considering making a first-time purchase, Martini suggests a furry shearling-lined clog for easy comfort, or a classic wooden-sole clog for a nostalgic fashion choice you can dress up or down. “The classic wooden-soled clog is perfect to wear on a relaxed weekend with socks and wide-leg jeans or cords, so they are just peeking out from under the hem, or with a chiffon long Chloé dress without socks,” she suggests. For a comfy alternative to your sandals this summer, maybe it’s time to try a pair of clogs on for size.
