Facing the elements—whether that means rain, sleet, or snow—requires the obvious: a good umbrella, an appropriate jacket, and most importantly, waterproof boots. (There’s nothing worse than having cold, wet socks all day long.) The best waterproof boots, says Zappos senior footwear buyer Julie Hardy, should be functional, comfortable, and fashionable, but finding a boot that checks all three boxes can seem impossible. That’s where we come in.

Hardy recommends first considering the weather you’ll be experiencing and how much time you’ll be spending outside. “If you’re just running errands, I would recommend a waterproof sneaker, clog, or duck boot,” she says. “If you are planning a ski trip, I’d recommend at least a six-inch, waterproof-lined snow boot; and if you have a heavy rain season where you live, I’d recommend a neoprene or rubber boot.”

Design features should not be neglected, either. “Liners, seals, shaft height, and materials used are all important determining features, as well,” Hardy says. For instance, people in colder climates may want to look for extra-warm linings, versus someone in a temperate state, who might need only a light, removable lining.

Keeping these tips in mind, our definitive list ranges from flat boots that you can actually walk in, to those with a comfortable heel height—such as a chunky platform. Below, shop the 20 best waterproof boots that will keep you dry, warm, and able to face the elements.

A ridged sole and orthopedic last provide stability to keep you moving, no matter what terrain you’re dealing with.
