The most beautiful suits for modern brides to wear on their big day
Swap the traditional big white gown for some bridal tailoring
There is no denying that wedding fashion is changing. Where the big white gown once felt like the only option available, the past few years have seen plenty of brides turning to more modern silhouettes, often shunning the traditional look in favour of something more toned down. This is even more true post-pandemic, where many brides have felt empowered to design a day that is more suited to them, and an outfit that is more in-keeping with their usual personal style. As a part of this, we have seen a significant rise in the number of women choosing to get married wearing a suit.
"Brides have loved the tailored look ever since Bianca Jagger wore a suit to her wedding in the 1970s, but since the pandemic we’ve found lots of women grow in confidence and want to wear them as their main outfit," Jess Kaye, co-founder of bridal brand The Own Studio tells us. "Women seem to be a lot braver with their style choices now; it's very much about being an individual and going with your gut rather than feeling pressured into wearing a more traditional silhouette. Our suit is now one of our best-selling styles and we are continuing to introduce fresh suiting pieces to the collection including a double-breasted tux jacket."
One major benefit of investing in a tailored two-piece over a traditional bridal gown is its re-wearability, something which is becoming more important to brides everywhere as we all become more aware of our impact on the planet. And of course, it makes sense for your wallet too when you get to wear your wedding outfit over and over again, rather than relegating it to the back of your wardrobe. "People really love the fact that they can wear suits again – this is something that is really important to the modern bride," Kaye adds.
If wearing a suit on your wedding day is something that you are considering, then the good news is that there could not be more options available right now. Whether you want something oversized or fitted, a skirt or a trouser, cream or bright white, there is plenty to choose from, whether from bridal brands or fashion houses. When choosing something that's right for you, Kaye says that it is all about the cut, the fabric and how you style it. "The suit is such a statement in itself so keep your accessories minimal, with a nice simple strappy shoe and barely there jewellery."
