When Matt Rubin went to look for his own wedding ring in 2016, he was left with an overwhelming sense of confusion. It was the first piece of jewelry he would be buying for himself, so he did what any millennial man would do: he typed best men’s wedding rings into Google. The results were...interesting.
“I knew I wanted something classic from a small jeweler, but all I could find were galleries of silicone rings, or really chunky rings with prominent designs on them,” says the New York-based 35-year-old.
CLASSIC ROUND
Left with more questions than when he started, Rubin figured it would be easier to walk into a jewelry store himself. But he was soon faced with the realization that most cater to women, who usually already know what they’re looking for. So he took his jewelry-designer fiancée with him (Olivia Fleming, the founder of Olivia Kane and editor at BAZAAR.com), who could help translate the confusing verbiage about finishes, widths and sizes.
“I had no idea what style, size, or metal to pick,” admits Rubin. “Olivia helped me narrow it down, but if she wasn't with me I’d have left more clueless than when I walked in. Choosing a wedding ring should be a special moment, but for men who have never actually worn jewelry before, it can be really overwhelming.”
After all, weddings have enough decisions, he adds.
Eventually, Rubin figured there had to be a better way—a place men could feel confident they would be taken care of, with someone at the ready to answer all of their questions. So with the help of his soon-to-be wife, he launched MR O.K (pronounced mister okay; an acronym for Matt Rubin, Olivia Kane—get it?) in June 2017, one month before his own wedding day.
