It feels like the more information we get about American Horror Story: Cult, the less we know. The very first piece of information Ryan Murphy gave us about Season 7 was that it would focus on the 2016 election, AKA the realest American horror story of all. But pretty much everything we've seen since then—clowns, bees, general cult-y terror—seems unrelated to politics.

During a panel at the TCA Press Tour this afternoon—during which several cast and crew members took great pains to reveal absolutely nothing about the new season—AHS producer Alexis Martin Woodall revealed what we've been long suspecting. The election theme is probably more metaphorical than literal.

“When Ryan had made the announcement originally that the series was going to deal with Trump… I think it’s more about what’s going on in the world around us," said Woodall. "It’s about the streak of paranoia, it’s not necessarily… it’s not what you think it is. I’m not trying to be cagey, I just think as with all good horror and suspense, knowing less is so much more. It’s an element in our launch point."

Asked to describe the new season in a few words, Woodall came up with this deeply enigmatic trio of phrases: "Bloody tension, a well-cooked meal, an exciting trip to a grocery store."

So... yeah, no idea. But one tidbit we did learn is that Sarah Paulson and Alison Pill are playing a married lesbian couple in the new season, which is a pairing we are so here for.
