Creating Motherhood is a collection of stories focused on the intersection of family and creativity and how to live an artful life as a parent.

When you become a mom, your needs change, but your personal style doesn’t have to. In “Mom Brain,” parents with great taste tell us what they're buying—for their kids and for themselves.

Right now on Mei Kawajiri’s Instagram account, there’s a picture of two hands, whose eight fingers are all wearing scrunchy socks and loafers. One thumbnail is decorated in the plaid of a schoolgirl skirt; the other is painted with a sailor top. It’s all in a day’s work for Kawajiri, otherwise known as @nailsbymei, who makes nail art with a strong emphasis on the “art” part of the equation.

Born in Kyoto, Japan, Kawajiri opened her own salon in Tokyo’s Harajuku district at the astonishingly young age of 23. After she came to New York in 2012, she began making a name for herself in the fashion industry—she’s created sculptural, high-concept nails for brands from Miu Miu to Marc Jacobs to Balenciaga. You can spot her work on members of New York’s club scene and on celebrities like Gigi Hadid.

Nine months ago, Kawajiri gave birth to a little girl, Itsuki. Below, she answers all our questions about how she’s been thinking about life, style, and manicures since she became a mom.

What’s the best vacation you’ve ever taken with kids?

Our first trip as a family was to Japan to see my parents. It was 14-hour flight, but worth it! I’ll never forget the first time Itsuki met her grandparents, and it was so special to show her where I grew up.

What’s your best advice to anyone who’s about to become a parent?

Take care of yourself in addition to taking care of the baby. I have never been busier in my life, but it’s important to take moments to not lose sight of yourself. Make time for yourself when you can! This has been so challenging, especially with my busy career, but I love being Itsuki’s mom.
