One winter season in New York feels like an eternity. So much so, that by the time the temperature peaks above 60 degrees, I completely abandon my bulky sweaters and winter boots. However, there is one sweater that I keep on rotation even when spring (and moderate summer) weather rolls around.
Just like me, you may have seen Jenni Kayne’s Cooper Cardigan on TikTok, as the sweater went viral last year. It’s reminiscent of the Khaite sweater-and-bra set that Katie Holmes wore that sent people into a frenzy. While the Khaite sweater costs a pretty penny (almost $2,000, to be exact), Jenni Kayne’s version is a more economical gateway into the structured cardigan trend, however, it’s still an investment purchase at its $525 price point. So when I finally bit the bullet and decided to try the sweater, I had high expectations. Thankfully, I can confirm the sweater is truly worth the hype.
Pulling the trigger on the sweater came down to two standout features: its universally flattering shape and substantial yet airy fabric. The subtly cinched waist adds definition and gives shape to an otherwise bulky garment. Also, the cropped silhouette on the sweater is perfection for a tall girl like myself (I'm 5'9")—it hits me right below my hipbones, so I can wear it to work buttoned-up or undo the bottom two buttons to make it feel more appropriate for dinner or a night out. Not to mention, the slight statement sleeves add a fun flare.
The second part that sold me was its cozy fabric, a cocooning, plush material that is straight out of my knitwear dreams. It’s a mix of cashmere and wool, so it feels buttery, but still breathable— not suffocating me on a warm day. I can easily wear the cardigan on a cold winter day, or style it with spring pieces, like shorts or a skirt.
Here are three ways to wear my newest knitwear obsession.
1. The Cardigan and Straight-Leg Jeans
For a cooler day, I styled the Cooper Cardigan with a pair of straight-leg jeans. I love the contrast of these darker wash Frame jeans and the light taupe color of the cardigan. Since the sweater (the bell sleeves in particular) adds volume, I opted for shiny accessories rather than jewelry.
2. The Cardigan and White Lace Skirt
When my outfit is on the neutral side, I try to elevate it by playing with shape and texture. The cinched cardigan helps create some definition, while this lace mesh skirt adds texture to the look. Different iterations of lace skirts have been trending, from ones spotted at Prada to lace-trimmed versions that nod to old Céline. (I’ve been wearing this old Theory skirt on repeat lately.) Plus, the A-line bottom of the cardigan adds a nice silhouette and lines up perfectly with the top of the skirt. I threw on these white square-toed heeled mules from Zara for a polished effect and will be adding a white bag before I step out the door. I love this pearl wristlet, which adds another layer of texture. To me, this is the ideal ladylike outfit.
3. The Cardigan and Shorts
If there’s one thing I can’t get enough of, it’s a monochrome look. Luckily, I have these taupe Meshki shorts that match almost perfectly to the taupe Cooper Cardigan, creating my perfect summer office uniform. I previously kept jewelry to a minimum, but for this look, I added a long gold locket to add depth. Lastly, I styled the look with these strappy black Tkees sandals that feel like walking on air.
