Nothing goes together quite like a wink and a smile, which is why makeup artists at New York Fashion Week teamed high-octane eyes with barely-there lips, or contrasted loud mouths with lid looks that barely whispered. Here, 7 ways to achieve the perfect beauty balance from backstage.

1

Metallic Pout + Flushed Lids

“A face like a cherry blossom” is how makeup artist Erin Parsons described the flashy crimson lip at Bibhu Mohapatra. Eyes were washed with blush and a bit of white highlighter on the inner corners. While Parson’s layered a red lip pencil with metallic powder to catch the light on the runway, Maybelline New York Color Sensational Matte Metallics Lipstick in Hot Lava offers a similar effect in one swipe.

Electric Eyes + Laid-Back Lips

Bursts of bright teal were made with party girls in mind at GCDS. Inspired by the socialites and glittering soirées of the 1950s, makeup guru Grace Lee swathed models’ lids with Maybelline New York Expert Wear Eye Shadow in Teal the Deal and added a touch of sparkly highlighter. Lips were slicked with Maybelline New York’s Baby Lips Moisturizing Lip Balm in Quenched—which makes sipping cocktails, without the fear of smearing, a reality off the runway.

The “un-precious” nod to the ballet at Naeem Khan naturally included a ballerina beauty staple: spotlight-stealing lips. Parsons buffed Maybelline New York’s Lasting Drama Waterproof Gel Pencil in Glazed Toffee around eyes. Then, the pro created a pout worthy of center stage with Maybelline New York Color Sensational Vivid Hot Lacquer in Sassy.

Painterly Lids + Twinkling Pouts

Beauty icons of the 1970s—like Bianca Jagger and Jerry Hall—served as the inspiration for the watercolor eyes at Self Portrait. She offset a buttery shade from Maybelline New York’s FaceStudio Master Fairy Highlight Rainbow Highlighter with a vivid violet above the tear ducts. Balm was used to moisturize models’ mouths, but why not take nude lips to the next level? Try Maybelline New York Color Sensational Matte Metallics Lipstick in White Gold for a hint of disco-inspired shimmer.

“The show is a play on light and dark,” explained Lee backstage at Public School. She contrasted luminous skin with a “sooty, pewter eye” using Maybelline New York The City Kits in Urban Light (available in 2018). Then, she added a light layer of Maybelline New York Lip Studio Shine Shot Lip Topcoat to lids and lips. “It gives the eye texture," she added. "The pigments start to move together, and it looks more interesting.”

Wine-Stained Lips + Burgundy Bedroom Eyes

“Dark romance” is how Gucci Westman characterized the enchanting garnet lids at Brock Collection. After priming eyes with Maybelline New York Color Sensational Matte Metallics Lipstick in Molten Bronze for a sultry sheen, she created a smudgy, smoky effect with burgundy eye shadow. For a stained finish, she applied Maybelline New York SuperStay Matte Ink Lipstick in Voyager then wiped some of it off—leaving lips with a warm, rosy tint.

Face painter Yadim applied a “pinky print” of military green from Maybelline New York City Mini Palette in Urban Jungle to the outer corners of models’ eyes at Jason Wu in lieu of a classic feline flick. “A wing can feel very couture or very madame, but we wanted to keep it cooler than that,” said the makeup artist of the “rounded wing with edge.” For a subtle kiss of color that keeps the focus on lids, he patted on a subtle flush of lip color, which you can mirror with Maybelline New York Color Sensational Lipstick in Pink Sand.
