Get ready for more endlessly quotable lines because a sequel to The Devil Wears Prada is reportedly on the way, almost two decades since Miranda Priestly first struck fear into our hearts with an icy "that’s all".

Based on the novel by Lauren Weisberger, the 2006 film follows Anne Hathaway’s Andy as she ventures into the cutthroat world of high-fashion publishing when she joins the prestigious Runway magazine. Becoming enthralled by Priestly (Meryl Streep) and facing off competition from difficult fellow assistant Emily (played by Emily Blunt), The Devil Wears Prada sees Andy struggle to juggle family and friends with her dominating new boss and career.

The Devil Wears Prada was a roaring hit among both the fashion pack and the average cinema-goer; it grossed over $326 million (about £251 million) worldwide and bagged itself two Oscar nominations in the process. So beloved is David Frankel’s film that a musical adaptation, starring Ugly Betty’s Vanessa Williams as ice queen Priestly, is currently running in London’s West End to hugely sold-out crowds. And tongues started wagging over speculation of a sequel, after the film’s original cast – Streep, Blunt and Hathaway – reunited at the SAG Awards in 2024 .

What to Read Next

With The Devil Wears Prada still widely treasured by its fanbase, it’s of little surprise that a sequel is on the way. Here’s everything we know so far – and what we can look forward to.

Is there going to be a sequel to The Devil Wears Prada?

So far, there’s been no official comment on whether a sequel has been confirmed. However, Puck magazine reported a follow up to The Devil Wears Prada was currently in the early stages of development at Disney. Sources also confirmed the news to industry magazine Deadline.

However, it does seem all the rumours and industry gossip may be true, as production on the new film has been confirmed.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is listed on the official Production List website - an official site which "monitors all major film and TV projects currently in pre-production and active development".

According to the site, shooting for the sequel is expected to begin on 30 November.

The rumoured cast are slightly more coy about whether a film is in the works. When quizzed at the premiere of Netflix's Electric State, Stanley Tucci refused to answer questions about whether The Devil Wears Prada 2 had started filming.

When asked what he made of the script, Tucci did however tell Entertainment Tonight that he's "very excited...if it happens."

A follow-up may be somewhat of a surprise to diehard fans of The Devil Wears Prada, as many of the main cast of the original film have dismissed any suggestion of a possibility over the years.

While Hathaway has previously toyed at the suggestion of returning as Andy as early as 2014, she sounded a lot more certain in a red-carpet interview earlier this year. “I don’t think a continuation of that story is probably ever gonna happen,” she said.

Blunt has been similarly dismissive of any idea of a sequel. In the Happy Sad Confused podcast, which she appeared on earlier this year, she claimed there had never been plans for a follow-up. “Sometimes things should be cherished and preserved in this bubble, and it’s okay,” she said.

Who will be in The Devil Wears Prada sequel?

A source has told Entertainment Weekly that the main cast of original film, including Streep, Hathaway and Blunt, are all in talks to reprise their roles for the sequel. Stanley Tucci, who played art director Nigel, is also thought to be discussing a return.

The Production List website has since confirmed all four actors will return.

David Frankel, who directed the original movie, is being considered to helm the follow-up, as is the first film's screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna, and producer Wendy Finerman.

What is The Devil Wears Prada sequel about?

Far removed from the glamour of the first film, The Devil Wears Prada sequel will focus on the decline of print media – and will see former adversaries go head to head once more.

According to Puck, the logline reads: “The storyline being discussed focuses on Miranda Priestly, Streep’s Wintour-esque protagonist, at the end of her career, facing the decline of traditional magazine publishing. She’s forced to go head-to-head with her former assistant, Blunt’s Emily Charlton, now a high-powered executive at a Kering or LVMH-style luxury group, whose advertising dollars Priestly desperately needs.”

When is The Devil Wears Prada sequel coming out?

With nothing officially confirmed and everyone in preliminary talks, it may be a long while, if at all, for a sequel to come to fruition. But should more groundbreaking news be released, Harper’s Bazaar will be the first to know. That’s all.
