It’s already been a year since the Maison Margiela Spring/Summer 2024 couture show, where makeup legend Pat McGrath and her team broke the internet by sending models down the runway wearing a transformative glass skin look.
Crafted backstage using up to seven layers of mystery peel-off face masks over makeup, the porcelain-doll look was endlessly replicated by hundreds of professionals and beauty content creators on TikTok and Instagram. The artist herself later took to Instagram Live to break down the process behind the viral look. It was, without exaggeration, the biggest beauty moment in recent history—and you can now replicate it flawlessly at home.
McGrath and team are once again showcasing their beauty prowess with a first look at the brand’s new Skin Fetish: Glass 001 Artistry Mask, which makes it simple to get the Maison Margiela glow with a single product. This new peel-off mask combines glycerin, rose-flower water, and allantoin to smooth and refresh skin with or without makeup. “Glass Skin 001 is my love letter to the Maison Margiela runway,” McGrath said in a statement. “This formula captures the brilliance of that iconic moment, delivering hyper-shiny, lacquered radiance and an ethereal glow in minutes. It’s beauty reimagined for makeup lovers everywhere.”
I had the pleasure of testing the mask firsthand at the Pat McGrath Labs headquarters in New York City. After applying a full face of makeup—including a smoldering eye, shimmery blush, and my new favorite nighttime lip combo—my makeup artist, Sofia Trotta, brushed on three layers of the artistry mask to seal the deal. She used a foundation shade slightly lighter than my natural skin tone for that doll-like result. She also applied the product all over my face except around my eyes, using a handheld fan to dry each layer completely before moving on to the next.
On skin, the mask’s gel-like texture initially feels cool and refreshing. Similar to other peel-off favorites I’ve used in the past, its formula dries down quickly to provide a subtle tightening effect that isn’t uncomfortable—though I couldn’t make any facial expressions while wearing the mask or its seamless look would have wrinkled. But when it came time to take it off, removing the mask all in one go was surprisingly easy once I broke into a wide smile.
While my face was practically flawless after Trotta was done with my makeup, I may have actually received more compliments about how glowy and radiant my skin looked after lifting off some of her handiwork with the Glass 001 Artistry Mask. Mother Pat certainly did her big one with this playful and inventive beauty staple.
Pat McGrath Labs’ Skin Fetish: Glass 001 Artistry Mask retails for $38 exclusively at patmcgrath.com and is available to beauty lovers everywhere on January 30.
