If you count yourself as a fan of the iridescent inner-corner-eye highlight look, allow us to introduce you to the newest makeup trend on the horizon: disco lips. Featuring the best shimmery glosses and balms, this viral beauty look makes it simple to add extra glitz and glam to your everyday look without going overboard.
Updated lip formulas from top brands like Fenty Beauty, Make Up For Ever, Isamaya Beauty, and Valentino Beauty’s upcoming Puffer Gloss provide a slight twinkle—not blinding shine—when caught in the light. “Frosted lips have a more opaque, icy look, while glitter lips contain visible sparkles or chunks of glitter,” Drita Paljevic, head makeup artist at Kevyn Aucoin Beauty, tells Bazaar. “Shimmery lips feature a soft, luminous sheen, borrowing elements from each trend but also shining uniquely on their own.” While sparkle-forward finishes are nothing new, they have become much more popular in recent months, even making an appearance in Miley Cyrus’s newly released “Something Beautiful” music video.
We first caught wind of the emergence of subtle yet impactful disco lips on the runway at Miu Miu’s Spring/Summer 2025 show, in addition to Christopher John Rogers’s Fall/Winter 2025 presentation. “It’s kind of like a lip story with a series of nudes and different colors. But in the CJR way, it’s not just a nude lip, it’s a shimmery galactic nude lip,” Christopher John Rogers lead makeup artist Alex Levy explained backstage. “Things that we know in a different dimension—I think it’s the first time that we’re playing with makeup in the third dimension. There are lips that sparkle, shine, and reflect and move with different lighting. We wanted to make it feel alive in a different way.”
Celebrity makeup artist Pat McGrath offered a different take on the trend at Miu Miu, using a mix of shades from her coveted Luminous Legends: Mega Eye Shadow Palette for shimmery liner to create the disco-lips effect instead of using an allover pigment. “You can have fun with your lips by going in with eyeshadow,” she said. “It’s such a small gesture that looks incredibly luxe. It’s like jewels on your lips.” The most popular shades for disco lips are typically nudes and cool tones, as they complement most skin tones while offering a universally flattering glow that makes the trend easy to integrate into virtually any look.
Speaking of eyeshadow, experts say you shouldn’t be afraid to balance shimmer on both your lids and lips for a well-rounded makeup look. But “if you’d prefer a more subtle, everyday version of makeup, then it might be best to stick to a matte eyeshadow and let your shimmery lips do the talking, creating a chic yet effortless contrast,” Paljevic adds.
As for where to wear your disco lips? “A shimmery lip look fits at festivals and parties alike,” the professional continues. “Since it’s so versatile, it works well for spring/summer events, holidays, and beyond. A touch of shimmer can always be added to the lips to elevate any makeup look, making it a trend that transcends seasons.”
