As we shed our winter layers for lightweight knits and transition our palettes from dark neutrals to bright pastels, it’s also time to reacquaint ourselves with arguably the season’s most romantic style: the white skirt. Made from buttery-soft cottons, linens, and silks, this airy wardrobe staple can just as easily be dressed up for snazzy rooftop cocktails as it can be styled for a long overdue walk in the park.
This season, the options have never been better. We got a hint that white skirts would be back in a major way during the spring/summer 2025 shows. Miu Miu sent down versions made of gauzy poplin, layered with dark knits to emphasize the contrast, while Tod’s and Tibi previewed sleek wraps and tailored pleated skirts, respectively. Now that spring has truly arrived, we’re suddenly seeing the styles everywhere, on everyone from street-style standouts to fashion-forward celebrities like Tracee Ellis Ross.
Below, five stylish ways to wear a white skirt this spring.
1. Countryside Charm
The countryside trend that swept through winter can most definitely transition into the spring. After all, wind and showers are what this season’s all about. Pair a white skirt with a waxy barn jacket and brightly colored clogs for an outfit that embraces sunnier days ahead while staying prepared for unexpected drizzles.
2. Lots of Layers
Take a styling note from Miu Miu’s Spring/Summer 2025 runway and layer away. A white skirt serves as the perfect blank canvas for, say, two jewel-colored tanks layered under a cropped bomber jacket. Balance it all out with a classic black boot.
3. Classic Stripes
Even if you’re not in the middle of packing for a weekend coastal getaway, seafaring stripes go hand in hand with white skirts. Finish off the look with a boat shoe or heeled ballet flat and a woven leather tote that can carry all the leisurely reading you’ll finally have a chance to dig into.
4. Preppy
Embrace the inner prep inside (the one who appreciates a tailored chino and a smart loafer) by pairing your tennis whites with a polo sweater and leather boat shoes. It’s a look that can easily work for the 9-to-5 but also plays nicely for a casual happy hour with colleagues or friends.
5. Strictly Business (Casual)
Add a black blazer to a head-to-toe white look for a visual contrast that never fails to look chic and put together. To add some texture, finish with an animal-print heel.
