Need some shopping inspiration? In Lucky 13, fashion tastemakers share the 13 items they’re loving so much, they’d hit “Add to Cart” twice.
You can draw a straight line from the most coveted fashion items of the past few years—like Alaïa’s buckled ballet flats and Prada’s candy-colored raffia totes—to Elsa Hosk. The model and founder of ready-to-wear brand Helsa has a gift for bestowing It-item status upon a piece simply by wearing it for her nearly nine million followers; coats and sweaters from her Scandi-style brand tend to sell out as soon as they’re released. You could say Hosk has a supernatural sixth sense for predicting what stylish women will really want to wear. Or, you could simply say she has great taste.
“I think everything I get is an impulse buy. I trust my intuition: If I see something I like, I get it,” Hosk says. “Sometimes I’ll have a vision of something I want though, usually vintage, and I have to really hunt for it. I love that process too—going to vintage shops or going through the entire internet to find this one distressed leather jacket I had in mind.”
Hosk finds colors and concepts for her brand, and her personal wardrobe, everywhere: in nature, in the women around her, in the deep throes of a Pinterest search. Another font of inspiration is shelved in her home: “My boyfriend has been collecting art, architecture, photography, and fashion books for a long time, so we have a huge library I dig into when designing or thinking about shoot concepts.”
The purest expression of Hosk’s style might just be the clothing she’s designing now. “I’ve gone through so many phases of expressing myself, and Helsa has been an incredible outlet for that, creating pieces that I know will be in my closet for a long time to come,” she explains. “As I’ve gotten older, my style has definitely come to rely on great investment pieces in good materials and classic, yet innovative shapes, and that’s what Helsa is all about.”
Ahead, Hosk shares the Lucky 13 items defining her style now—including items from the Row, Levi’s, and her own label that she already owns in multiples.
