Meet the experts
- Alexandra Stratyner, PhD, is a licensed psychologist based in New York City.
- Shelby Harris, PsyD, DBSM, is a licensed clinical psychologist and behavior sleep medicine expert based in White Plains, New York.
Who shouldn't use a weighted blanket?
Weighted blankets aren't recommended for everyone. Harris says that people with breathing issues, anyone who feels claustrophobic and underweight, and young children should avoid weighted blankets.
"They can also be too heavy for people with mobility concerns, so it’s important to make sure the blanket feels comfortable and not overwhelming," she adds. "For most people, though, they’re safe and can be a great tool for better sleep."

How heavy should your weighted blanket be?
According to Harris, the general recommendation is to choose a weighted blanket that weighs the equivalent of approximately 10 percent of your body weight. "For example, if you weigh 140 pounds, a 14-pound blanket should feel just right," she says.
Most of the weighted blankets on the market range in weight from 10 to 25 pounds, but some brands feature products with lighter and heavier options.
Keep in mind that opting for a heavier-than-recommended blanket may cancel out the calming benefits of the wellness essential. According to Harris, an overly heavy blanket could make it harder to move around freely or breathe easily.
What other qualities should I look for in the best weighted blankets?
Outside of the general weight recommendation, determining which weighted blanket is right for you may come down to a few design, sleep, and comfort-related factors. "Simply choosing one that appeals to you, whether aesthetically or based on technical features that you have a personal preference for, may add to the self-care benefits by increasing the enjoyment the blanket brings," licensed psychologist Alexandra Stratyner says.
- Size: Weighted blankets are available in standard bed sizes, like twins, full/doubles, queens, and kings, as well as in throw blanket dimensions, so factoring in where you'll be cuddling up with your blanket and how you want it to drape over your bed or couch is important.
- Fabric and Design: You can find weighted blankets made from a variety of fabrics like velvet, 100 percent cotton, cotton blends, polyester, bamboo, and more. "Some blankets are made with cooling technology, so if you tend to get hot at night, look for breathable or moisture-wicking fabrics," Stratyner recommends.
- Care: Weighted blankets aren't always the easiest piece of bedding to wash. Some blankets feature removable machine-washable covers, while others without covers are machine-washable in their entirety. Some blankets are dry-cleaned or spot-cleaned only, so you'll want to keep your care preferences in mind when shopping too.
- Fill: Weighted blankets get their weight from either the fabric itself or from a fill material. The most common fill material consists of tiny glass microbeads.
