Cynthia Erivo has touched down at the 97th annual Academy Awards.
Tonight, the performer made her grand entrance at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, where she stepped onto the red carpet wearing a magnificent ball gown made out of deep emerald-green velvet, custom-made by Louis Vuitton. The dress featured sharp geometric features, from a pointed neck collar to enormous off-the-shoulder details, as well as a voluminous skirt that grazed the floor.
Since Wicked’s premiere, Erivo and her stylist, Jason Bolden, have drawn sartorial inspiration from the wonderful world of Oz. From channeling Elphaba’s signature green and black color palette to adopting motifs from other Ozian characters (hello, Tin Man!), Erivo’s recent red-carpet style has been full of whimsical and daring fashion moments.
Bolden previously opened up about his working relationship with Erivo in a 2020 interview. “No matter what you see Cynthia in, she’s having a great time, and it feels so good. Even if you would never wear that look, there’s a happiness and a joy to her presence that people are drawn to,” he said at the time. “On the carpet, we’re having fun, because at the end of the day, we want to make someone else who has never had an opportunity or thinks they can’t do it see a joyous reflection of themselves.”
At tonight’s ceremony, Erivo is nominated in the category of Best Lead Actress. Fellow nominees include Karla Sofía Gascón, Mikey Madison, Demi Moore, and Fernanda Torres. Erivo is additionally expected to take the stage tonight alongside Wicked costar Ariana Grande, who is also nominated for an Oscar, to perform songs from the Broadway adaptation.
