Duchess Meghan wishes she had met Princess Diana just as much as Prince Harry wishes she had.

In her new sit-down on The Jamie Kern Lima Show, Meghan commented on the late Princess of Wales, who has now become a symbol of style, elegance, motherhood, and resistance within the restrictive British royal lifestyle.

Since marrying Harry, Meghan has been compared by many to his mother, another woman who married into royalty, was fiercely scrutinized, and carved her own path (though Diana’s had a tragic, early ending).

Diana died in a car crash on August 31, 1997, when Prince William was just 15 years old and Harry was 12. Over the years, Harry has said how his wife shares certain qualities with his late mother, and how he believes the two would have been great friends—“thick as thieves, without question.” he told the BBC in 2017.

Once Harry and Meghan married in 2018, the prince gifted his wife the Cartier Tank watch once owned by mom Diana. He also used diamonds that belonged to his mother to create Meghan’s stunning engagement ring.

“So Harry said publicly, ‘So much of what Megan is and how she is so similar to my mum. She has the same compassion. She has the same empathy. She has the same confidence. She has this warmth about her.’ How do you feel about him sharing that?” Kern Lima asked the duchess during the interview.

“It’s beautiful,” Meghan replied. “I wish I could have met her.”
