The first Monday of May is almost here, and that means the fashion world is absolutely buzzing. Celebrities are starting to flock to New York City ahead of this year’s Met Gala, and one of the most anticipated debuts is already serving a look for the books.
Before stepping onto the Met steps for the first time, Grammy-winning rapper Doechii is teasing her upcoming outfit with a playful nod to none other than fashion icon André Leon Talley. As we’ve seen before, Doechii is a true student of the craft.
Ever the fan of a good reference, she posted a photo on Instagram that channels one of Talley’s most iconic moments: A shot of him exiting a hotel surrounded by Louis Vuitton luggage and toting a tennis racket.
In her tribute, Doechii wears a red and white tracksuit with a navy blue Louis Vuitton towel draped around her neck. She’s flanked by several LV trunks—and of course, a tennis racket—mirroring Talley’s original photo, which she shared on her IG story.
She even nails the same gleeful expression as the former Vogue editor-at-large, leaving her mouth open as she props one leg up and smoothly swings a trunk forward with one hand and the monogrammed racket pouch back with the other. She coyly captioned the photo, “ready?”
While Doechii has shown herself to be a true Thom Browne muse, her post is keeping us on our toes for what she and her stylist, Sam Woolf, have up their sleeves for the Met Gala.
This year's theme is “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” inspired by Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity.
When it comes to modern-day Black dandyism, Talley remains an enduring reference. It's only right that Doechii would look to him for inspiration.
